Always Wear Your Special Heavy Duty Boots...

I picked up Jeanne Birdsall's affectionate and playful first picture book,"Flora's Windy Day" after reading an interview at Seven Impossible Things Before Breakfast.
The story features Flora, willful older sister to Crispin, who has just made her very angry.
When their mother opens the door and Flora and Crispin step outside, a strong wind carries Crispin away. Flora is tempted by the different characters they meet on their airborne adventure to leave her little brother with them. What will she do? Little brothers can be such a trial!

My 6 year old daughter and I loved this book and shared it with her Sparks (Girl Guides, ages 5-6 years) Group for the meeting where wind was the theme. All of the girls were captivated and wondered aloud about what Flora was going to do. Many of the girls have younger siblings and I'm sure they could relate to Flora's dilemma.
Matt Phelan's whimsical water colours give a fluid motion and a warm, dreamy quality to the story. They are perfect!

Jeanne Birdsall is probably best known for her National Book Award Winner "The Penderwicks: A Summer Tale of Four Sisters, Two Rabbits, and a Very Interesting Boy". It is our current bedtime book and so far, we're thoroughly enjoying it. It is a timeless adventure story with unique characters that is reminiscent of some of Enid Blyton's Famous Five or The Adventure Series books that I grew up reading.
